I can’t believe that this site is not more popular than it is! I teach high school, so it was not on my radar but if you are a K-6 ELA or Mathematics teacher you need to check out this tool called Boddle!
Boddle is a gamified learning platform that looks and feels like a generic mobile game. Once students sign up for your class via generated codes or a simple class code they will customize their character known as a Boddle.
Once the students have created their customized character, they will see a home screen pictured below that looks just like a mobile game. There is a shop, a backpack with all of their earned items from playing, messages, friends list, and challenges. Students will “play” the assignment that was issued to them via the teacher’s Boddle dashboard. This can be gamified practice and it is quite easy to get set up.
When creating an assignment, you start with the standards you are assessing, practicing, or simply gathering data on. They have standards for many states including Common Core. I chose two math standards for students, set the number of questions for each standard and voila, the game is generated.
When students “play” the assignment, they are able to interact by drawing/writing the answer on the screen via the pencil tool. The audio tool will read them the question, which is especially great in the ELA section for students who struggle with reading long passages. The TV icon will play a video which shows the students how to solve the type of problem being displayed. No teacher around? No problem. This tool has the student covered.
Once the student gets a question wrong an immediate solution is displayed, breaking the question down for the student to be able to see what they did wrong and have another go at it.
Finally, you have personalized data for each student based upon a standard. This makes standards-based monitoring of student progress much more efficient as the AI acts as a secondary teacher. As students will progress through standards, learning gaps will eventually be generated for students in order to effectively differentiate for each student.
I’m not a huge fan of gamified learning in the classroom, but this is a pretty cool tool. I find it to be something to send home with parents to share responsibility in the learning process. As a high school teacher, I find this tool to be utterly amazing!
